Although Folsom, California was made famous worldwide in 1956 through a Johnny Cash song, the city's history stretches much further back. The community's establishment dates back to the California Gold Rush period (1848–1855). Gold was discovered near the American River, which led to mining and eventually the creation of a railway. Another popular history attraction in Folsom is the prison, which stands as the second oldest prison in California after San Quentin.
